If you really must, there's a 4x4 version too, but I suggested FWD because simpler (but if 4x4, also have a look for a Fiat Sedici which is almost unknown and so rather a rare bird, and often a bargain, despite it being almost identical to the SX4 - I had one bitd ) That 1.6 engine is a really sweet little unit btw.

Don't discount diesels entirely. Residents inside the M25 have to pay ulez charge, so could get a bargain if you live outside a ulez area.

Avoid the Jazz - the location of the cat makes them easy to steal, and they're number one target for thieves. The loss of the catalytic converter would be enough to write off a 2k Jazz.

I was checking and the last recorded plod data I can find is that in the whole of Cumbria there were 11 catalytic converter thefts.

Apparently requires the removal of the subframe and dropping of the gearbox in order to gain access, followed by checking the steering alignment afterward etc… bit of a silly design apparently! The French are flamboyant. Lol

The subframe on my Accord had to come out to replace the clutch too, but it wasn't anything like a 12 hour job. Which rated Honda as one of the more expensive by average cost of a repair, but the cheapest of all by overall cost of ownership, because the repair costs were offset by the reliability. It had the clutch done once in 180,000 miles.

My own Honda civic needed a new sidelight. It needed wheel removal and prising enough clearance for a plastic panel underneath, so I can confirm supposedly simple tasks can be a balls' ache. I got the garage to do it as it was already in for an MOT

By way of anecdote I had to replace
the headlamp bulb on my Saab. Huge
palaver unscrewing access panels, which I put down to the hassle of owning an executive car, then found the other side had blown as well. About to grit my teeth and spend another couple of hours on it, then "hang on, what'a this clip?". Sure enough it should have been a five minutes job, rather better thought out than it would have been on a cheap car!

Done this job on my civic. Turned wheel in. Popped the poppers got my little hand in.
You don’t need to remove the wheel it just helps with the access.
