Best value for money concert you've been to

Have been to loads and loads of great concerts but for value for money I have to say.

Mr Elvis Costello. Stand up and take a bow sir!!!

Prompted by him coming on the radio there. Don't love him but can listen to his stuff no problem. Been to see him a few times and he's famous for playing 2+ hours on a regular basis.

Went to see him for a few years ago and he said after about 2 hours

"listen Glasgow, I love playing here and this is one of those nights I'm loving what I do more than usual, I know some of you will have trains and buses to catch so I won't be offended if you leave but I'm just going to play on for a while if you don't mind". played some new unheard stuff which was okay and a couple of oldies from requests, but the fact was he eventually went off stage that night after 3 hours 20 mins.

Great value.

for me it was live 8. Though the tickets were free, the missus sent about a tenner worth of texts to get them. I'd happily have paid ten times that. We got to see the who and pink floyd... Among many others. It was a great day out!

Lollapalooza '07 Saturday
they had Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Muse, Stephen Marley, The Roots, Snow Patrol, Interpol, Pete Yorn, Spoon, Cold War Kids, Lady GaGa. Some big names on the other stages and days as well.

Few years back went to a Charity gig at the London Astoria as we did a fair bit of work for Mean Fiddler at the time, it was for Make Trade Fair and the advertised line up was mediocre.

There was about 100-150 people in the venue so it was a very chilled out atmosphere with loads of room to move about and buy drinks. After the warm up acts (Lamb and Miss Dynamite) it was announced that two special guests had arrived, on walked Chris Martin and Noel Gallagher, they played some of there own stuff, did some duets and did some covers together and some on their own, was just like a 1.5 hour jamming session between the two of them. Tickets cost £10 and we were 6/7ft from Noel and Chris watching them play (mostly accoustic).

Randomly bumped into Noel about a month later in a coffee bar in Soho and said I was at the gig and thought it was awesome.... he agreed and said it was really good fun.

Hmmm...I think Leonard Cohen was the best value, even though the most expensive, faultless. Apart from that, a couple of concerts at Ross On Wye a few years back, got to see The Waterboys and Beth Orton, excellent value. Been to loads of others, and whilst good were still quite dear.

My one would be Deftones, one of my favourite bands - it happened that the first gig that they had lined up had to be cancelled as the singer had problems with his voice and throat so it was rescheduled and the tickets were still valid but they were short of one supporting act. Came in halfway through the one and only support act and waited for the second act to play but Deftones came on and ended up playing a two hour set-great stuff.

Closely followed by Spiritualized- none stop set - excellent

EDIT: Funny that I wrote specialized not spiritualized- bikes on the brain!!

EDIT: Got a ticket for free for Orchestra Baobab at the Barbican - my friend and I were seated but snuck down into the seats past the woman at the door below when everyone started dancing and joined infront of the stage-it was a great atmosphere that suited the music - who sits down for such good music?

One year there was an Elton John concert at the bull ring in my wife's town in northern Spain. It wasn't quite full and so to make up the numbers (for the benefit of the TV cameras) they were rounding up people off the streets to go in free of charge. I got in right up front and it didn't cost me a single euro.

Deeply Vale Festival in 1978: Misty in Roots, The Fall, The Ruts, The Out, Here and Now, Nik Turner, Steve Hillage and many more. All for free (apart from the goat curry).

If it was for 'best value' it'd have to be an American singer called Kelly Willis (I know, who?) - she was playing at an outdoor venue in Austin, Texas (it was also a big food and drink fair too).
The people on the gate wouldn't let us in without paying full weekend rate so we were stood watching through the wire fence when a couple came out and said 'if you want to go in have our VIP passes' - freebie city all the way y'all.
She even signed a couple of CDs for us!

9 August, 1986.
I'd been out on a ride, and took a short cut back through Knebworth Park. Sat on the grass and listened to Big Country for a bit, but didn't see anything as the concert area was all fenced off.
Later that evening, I went back with a few mates. They'd taken the fences down so everyone could get out after the concert, so we wandered in to see the main headline act.
I saw the last ever Queen gig for nothing. :smug:
