Invite them in for a drink.

If my dad was still alive  they would be in for a shock he did invite them in .

he was a guy who was into Zen and the teaching of carlos castenada (mexican indian shamanism) etc and loved to talk anyway so it was not getting rid of them it was if they could escape;)

Like most people they want to share what they think is good for other people, like how we like cycling/jogging and enjoy it when others take it up. I suppose it works much in the same way. I find them no problem at all and enjoy talking about the differences in religions etc. Wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same.

Invite them in, be lovely - it really confuses them.

:ohmy::ohmy: A blatant rip off from a Jack Dee sketch!

You should be ashamed of yourself!

They caught my wife while she was in the garden last year and she said she is busy can they come back... they came back (despite what I told them) every week for about 3 months... every time it was the same young lad and girl yet they acted like it was the first time they had ever been there.

I swear they sit back at JW base camp and plan which houses to target for maximum humour!:laugh:

But realistically who are they hurting? A 16 year old lad knocking on doors handing out leaflets is not scaring old ladies or getting your daughters pregnant!

When I was a student I had a boyfriend who had been raised by JWs so I knew a few of them. Being "cross-awkward" (my grandmothers description) I used to find it absolutely infuriating that it was impossible to actually discuss anything with them - they were all so completely sure that they were right and that watchtower is 100% accurate that any "discussion" simply involved them telling me. Needless to say the relationship was doomed from the start.

As for them calling at the door - they're entitled to their beliefs but I'm entitled to enjoy my home in peace with the constant cold callers we get round here.

Their children who they indoctrinate? The people they tell not to have a life saving blood transfusion?

I find it odd that we are being told not to trample on harmful and irrational beliefs because the people who promote it seem quaint and happy.

I was focusing on the whole knocking on the door thing as with the OP. I dont particularly want to get into a religious discussion (on a sunday evening).

Having said that I am a firm believer that the Doc's should be able to enforce some sort of power of attourney when there are kids that could be saved but the parents beliefs are directly contributing to their health deteriorating.

Never happen. Doctors can only treat a person with that person's consent otherwise it's assault and quite right too. In the case of a child, the parent has to act in the child's interest and again, quite right too. If not, doctors could perform all sorts of procedures for their own gratification or learning experiences under the dubious pretext of it being "necessary". It's maddening when a religious belief prevents a life-saving procedure from being carried out but that's the way of it and that's the guidleines they have to operate under.

the ones that call here are polite, profess an interest in all matters of faith, and, I imagine, have to deal with the occasional racist. I try to be polite and simply say that I'm unlikely ever to be convinced. I've never invited them in, but sometimes feel that I should - most people calling door to door (other than on sales missions from utilities companies) are adding to our social capital.

The Mormons, on the other hand, called on my grandmother in her last years and took money from her.........

I consider it my duty to convert these misguided people. There is no likely hood of there being a god of any sort. I aint seen no fairies nor beardy men in the clouds or pixies .... neither has anyone else, never even been caught on cctv, it is all probably a load of old cobblers that gets used by deviant priests to control the people and gain power....

It was thanks to a JW visitor pointing out that the bible does tell you to not join religious organisations that I can point that one important rule out to them.

[ I don't know where to find the passage but this JW did and then she walked off, never to be seen again. ]

It also advises against praying in man made temples....

Find your own way brother, it ain't in a book.... best thing you can say before you shut the door on them.

The Mormon church is scary, those high up in the church are obviously only concerned with doing very nicely out of the 10% of salary they collect from their members. A friend of mine is Mormon, but fortunately the subject of religion is never brought up. I decided to do a bit of reading on them and found this quite interesting:

http://packham.n4m.org/tract.htm

In Irkutsk 3 years back, I met a group of Mormons who'd been sent there from the States to do their missionary work. They suggested to us that they had the answer the problem of alcoholism in Russia - which was obviously Moromonism though they didn't say it out right. Most of their work was teaching English to locals, which we were told was out of the goodness of their hearts and nothing to do with making it easier to convert people.... Couldn't help being a bit cynical over that one....

Did wonder whether they'd upset their church having being sent to Siberia....

I don't feel bad about having a go at JW's as I think they actually do some harm. A mate of mine's mum got converted, it spilt the family up and she ended up chucking herself under a train.
I used to work with a bloke who was full on JW, one time we were asked to do a 3 year business plan. He wrote on his section 'a 3 year plan is irrelevant due to the cataclysmic events about to engulf the world'. Funny thing was he still paid enhanced contributions into the company pension plan.
