This needs a Drago type vote really.
Looks like the rail li l is a out to start.
So.......£106 BILLION to shave 30 minutes off a journey
Or
X number of new hospitals
X number of cycle lanes
X number of schools
etc etc
How do you feel it should be spent ?

Bonkers! Just a vanity project. Soooo many better way to spend this amount of dosh.

This isn’t a Cafe thread.
HS2 has a number of benefits, the capacity increase being the main one to free up the old line for freight and more local services.
But the cost does seem very high.
The post isn't supposed to start a debate of whether the link is right or wrong.
Merely, as per title, where do you think it should be spent
If you think it should be spent on the link that's fine, just say so.
Schools
Buses
Care homes
Hospitals
Whatever you think is best.

Just a barrier section for cycles on all major (commutable) routes would be nice, to prevent close passes and to enable peds and cyclists to have a nice straight run without having to hop off and divert every 2 minutes. And spend it outside of London

All the protests seem to be from rich southerners moaning that their houses will be devalued, more freight/passengers on the Railway will mean less cars/lorries on our congested roads. At least it will reverse some of Beeching's stupidity'

Shame we can't get EU funding for infrastructure projects anymore though.

A good show trial, followed by several executions of ex-gibberment ministers.

Not because the present 'douche de merde' are that much worse than some previous governments, but to encourage the next bunch that they're there to serve the public not to line their and their friends' pockets.

We do need an improved integrated public rail/bus system and that needs investment in infrastructure, but HS2 isn't it.

Better to improve/replace existing.+ build new lines for higher speed full electrification to get rid of diesel powered engines completely with better banking/ smooth out curves and add new routes connecting/relocating main line stations. Finally improve and systematically replace all existing rolling stock

As I understand it, the cost as presented is misleading, as other Countries separate the direct infrastructure measures from the other aspects of it. A fair proportion of the cost is allocated to improving branch lines, that will have more capacity as they won't have to be sidelined to accommodate mainline trains coming through. As one example, even though not directly linked, branch lines in Wales will see improvements as part of the HS2 project.

If the costs include adding new track/ replacing all existing rails/ smoothing out curves and improving banking on the entire East and West Coast mainlines then improvements can be made... but the route description link below makes no mention of improving branch lines or existing tracks. Nor does it mention improving the vital cross country routes.

More of a shame for the SSSI , Ancient woodlands , nature reserves that now find they are in the way. Not to forgetting the odd new housing estate, bit's of newly open canal oh and most of a scout camp along the way.
