Surely it's quicker and easy to chop most bike locks off than using whatever tools are needed to cut through that much metal? Unless maybe those stands have an easier to cut through material in the middle. But looks like they had a few goes, amazed people would just walk past because clearly not a 30 seconds and run job.

Guess you could turn up in high-vis and hardhat and pretend to be a contractor doing some legitimate work but still, surely someone would think it is suspicious, especially if done in the early hours?

Yes but they only need do it once to the stand and pick as many bikes as they like over the coming weeks.

Exactly. They take the time to cut the stand - maybe at night, then get a nice bike that is locked to it in a few seconds during the day. Edit: or a lot of nice bikes, thanks @Markymark. It wouldn't occur to me to check the stand for cuts if my bike was gone. I'd assume they'd cut the lock, or I hadn't locked it well. One stand like this could be a right earner, to quote Minder.

And who would question anyone fussing with tools around a bike stand that had nothing locked to it?

Looks like some of the media outlets are requesting the photos so hopefully will get a bit of coverage to spread awareness (although could also encourage other devious copycat thieves...).

Absolute s***s. Clever but real s***s. You have to wonder, if they turned their attention to legal ideas/inventions.......what could they achieve.
They could do the cuts one night and the next day steal maybe 5 bikes.......that could go on for several days as even the victims may not realise how it happened.

I have often thought that, especially with crimes like bank fraud or computer hacking where the criminals are clever and talented enough to earn a lot of money without breaking the law. I think some of them just get a kick out of messing with other people!

Easy enough to get away with it in broad daylight, turn up at weekends or the middle of the day, look like you are meant to be there, cut the stand, sort of repair it and off you give. Give it a couple of days and then it is rich pickings. ill always douhble check where I lock the bike up from now on for sure!

The FBI have demanded that Sheffield redesign their stands with this feature built in, so they can remove bicycle bombs from lockups and also prevent pedofiles from pedofiling.
