I thought that discs had been approved for this season, just too late for the tour. So was expecting all bikes next year to come as standard with discs...just like them pros.

Teams are allowed to test at any two UCI pro events during August and September this year, and testing will also continue at all UCI pro events in 2016, with a vew to full introduction in 2017.

Philippe Gilbert of BMC thinks unequal braking is one of the problems.

“You will never have every team on discs, but you couldn’t have some with and some without because that would cause crashes. The ones with discs will brake in 10 metres and the ones without 20 metres.”

I've always thought this about disk brakes but then the "my rim brakes stop just fine" brigade start taking about tire friction.
Or is Gilbert only talking about braking in the wet?

Im heavy as a fat man on a diet of pies, and rim brakes stop me very abruptly - nothing to do with being in a brigade, a simple fact.

That said, my next road bike will be disc braked but thats only for the long term rim wear issue, not because ive ever had a problem hauling to a stop from any speed.

I agree rim brakes will stop just as well as discs in the dry, so I imagine Gilbert is concerned about the wet.

Either way, he knows a bit more about riding in a pro peloton than me.

Disk brakes would be great for us commuters, would save the rims from wearing out (The only reason for binning my last two sets of wheels)

The 'next big thing' in cycling happened in the 1920s. The UCI banned them from competition. The clue is in my handle :-)
The bike would be shaped like a panda bear?

Well, I get the feeling rim brakes aren't as powerful as disks, with both bikes having come out the same lbs after a service. Idk if that's real or just a feeling, since one bike is mtb, the other is rb.
