Bicycle work stands

Can I just say - and in spite of what the manufacturers of these workstands put on the box - that it's very bad practice to clamp a bike anywhere but the seat post. Unless it's an old steel shitter whose paint you don't care for. For many manufacturers, evidence of frame clamping is a warranty voider.

Carbon and aluniman frame tubes, paint and decals are not designed to withstand the loads imposed by a clamp. Seatposts are.

This of course exposes the #1 failing of many domestic work stands - that they are simply not tall enough. Check before you buy.

I have the Park Tools PCS-10 stand, bit dearer than some of the others here, but very sturdy and well made.

As an alternative, I am considering making one. ....

that's more my kind of thinking/.. although I'm not keen on the design.

I'm thinking on making something that fits onto a folding workbench... but still in the scratching my head part of the design stage.

reckon there's a few posters here who've built their own... if so, show us your stand!
