Found this in my flat after coming in from work. Looks like some kind of dragonfly, but do they grow to this size? The coin is £1 to give some scale...

I think it might be an Emperor Dragonfly.

The male is a pretty blue colour and the female is green . We used to have them in our pond but I only saw females coming out of it . 4.5 inch wing span .

We didn't have any in our pond this year or last . It might be that the pond has become too overgrown with plants . The nymphs feed on the tadpoles in the pond .

I saw a documentary on you tube the other week where they caught many such creatures in nets, then deep fried them before eating them!

Fortunately, this one was caught in Largs, not Greenock.

Back in prehistoric times some dragonflies had a wing span of over a metre !
