Great day out that was. Boat over to Papay from Westray, walked right round Papay, in glorious sun, sat in a stone age house eating my cheese and oatcakes and pondering on the Neolithic souls who would have sat there with the same view (albeit with more roof) eating, very likely, cheese and oatcakes. Arrived at the airstrip so early, it was shut, until a landrover turned up and the entire ground crew (one chap) got out and went to man the 'departures desk'.
That landrover was also the fire tender, it towed a little trailer bowser down the runway and back.
I've heard a story from a friend, of them being on the last flight into Kirkwall for the day, and when the pilot heard they were archaeologists, he diverted to give them an aerial tour of the main sites on the island.
