Big trailers

Can you put a crate inside the fabric trailers linked to here? I know that's what @Pat "5mph" does when she takes her cat to the vets.

@Sara_H I actually put the cat's traveling box in the trailer, secured by the provided straps.
My trailer is marketed for "small to medium dogs".
TBH, would not put a dog in it, unless an unusually docile one.
What if the dog gets spooked, decides to make a run for it?
Not safe imo.

The Christiana can take her mobility scooter.... but at nearly 60 kg in dead weight, the assist is useful for hills.

It's nice. Where is the pivot point? Between the front wheels or below the handle bars?

I think you attach the dog by its lead to the trailer inside, and as far as I can see you can fully encolse the dog inside, so even if it spooked it would seem they wouldn't be able to go too far.

How about a Cargo bike?

I think you set your mind on what you wanted way before posting any questions. You did state in your original post that you didn't want a fabric type as you felt they weren't safe enough. Apparently thousands think they are safe enough for their kids.

Actually, I had considered something like a Christiana or Bakfiets trike because it would keep the dogs in front of me, where I could keep an eye on them, but had ruled it out because they're a bit pricy. But if I can't get the price of the trailer down a bit, maybe that puts them back in the running again.

And you're absolutely right; I had set my mind on what I wanted before posting any questions. That was why my question was if anyone knew of a manufacturer of what I wanted within Europe. (If someone posted to ask where they could source a particular part they needed, would you reply, "I don't know where you can get it, but you could get this part that won't do exactly what you need instead"?)

Thanks for your feedback, Pat. There's nothing docile about either of my dogs!! I also want them to travel in separate compartments. If they get over-excited, they're liable to scrap a bit, and I don't need to deal with that while I'm riding.

@Pat "5mph" makes a good point. Fabric sides and boisterous dogs... I'd consider a harness with a chest attachment.

Try contacting Carry Freedom and enquiring if they make or can adapt a Y frame to your size.
Other than that, look at their bamboo trailer, you can make that any size you want.

What do you mean by "long arm"? The only platform trailer I can see on their website is the Y-FRAME in 2 different sizes, neither of which is big enough to take 2 transport crates.

On the dog forum I visit, most people are horrified that I'd even consider transporting my dogs in a bike trailer (even with IATA approved transport crates) - far too dangerous.

I can get that, and can understand requirements

Having been involved in dog rescue and transport, I agree dogs should be transported securely, in transport crates where possible - even in a car. For similar reasons - if involved in a shunt, the first thing to pop open is the tailgate and a dog will bolt. Happens all too often, even when it's a family dog in a familiar family car. I wouldn't recommend transporting a dog without a proper crate or similar security.

People drawing parallels between child trailers are not understanding the issue of dog transport.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer to your question as the only other way I have ever transported a dog without a car, has been by train. People ARE trying to be helpful though, even if they aren't getting it

I'll bet. If the hinge was in front of the front wheels, you'd get a certain amount of self centering. Akin to trail and rake. I guess it's there for stability and to try and reduce the side loads on the hinge though.

Have you considered making your own trailer?
You know what its intended use is, so can adapt/build round that.

Bikes at work have on their site a picture of a person doing exactly what you intend doing. Transporting two dogs in cages/boxes.
If you were to work with cages rather than boxes, then they could be the trailer or suitable points could be made for ensuring they remain in place, when on the trailer.

The "long arm" arm is an extension that enables the trailers to take long loads such as canoes etc.

The base plate could then be extended......

There is a company in Derbyshire that produces the "Tamar" at aboy £800 - again cheaper than the US trailer option.
