Thats good news for some of us then...

Men and women with large thighs have a lower risk of premature death and heart disease, a study has shown. Bigger thighs are better for health
People whose thighs measure at least 23.6in (60cm) in circumference were less likely to develop heart disease or die early, a 12-year study of almost 3,000 men and women in Denmark found. Professor Berit Heitmann said thigh size could be used by GPs as "an early marker to identify patients at later risk of cardiovascular disease and early mortality". "A small thigh circumference was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart diseases and total mortality in both men and women," he said.
"A threshold effect for thigh circumference was evident, with greatly increased risk of premature death below around 60cm."
He added: "The fact that more than half of the men and women aged 35-65 have thigh circumference below the threshold is worrying."

The Monica (monitoring trends in and determinants of cardiovascular disease) project, published online on bmj.com, found there was no added protective effect for people with thighs in excess of 60cm.

Body fat and other high risk factors such as smoking and high cholesterol were taken into account by the study.

Prof Heitmann, director of the research unit for dietary studies at Copenhagen University Hospital, said: "The adverse effects of small thighs might be related to too little muscle mass in the region."

The thigh's the limit

I used to know a Cornish bloke who would approvingly say, of women with big and shapely thighs, "Gurt big thodders on the maid!"

And somebody spent years working that out? What a pile of bollox! These researchers really are scraping the barrel in a bid to make a name for themselves and attract funding.

Surely it's obvious that if you don't exercise your leg muscles will be under-developed?

I'm slim and a quick check shows my thighs to be around 50cms diameter but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to die from premature heart disease.

At risk of being called a prude (I don't mind myself), some people might not want that pic to flash up on work screens or if they are overlooked. Any chance of editing it to a link, not an image, please?

Quite.

Also, as with all this specific research, they fail to mention it doesn't apply if you have big thighs and big everything else. So Chris Hoy is ok. I recall reading somewhere that women who have large thighs tend not to be as much at risk from heart disease as the fat is being laid down (like a fine wine I would imagine) away from the mid-riff. Hence the reason most men (and women) with fat bellies, and fat anything else, are at greater risk.

Sounds a bit harsh to me, particularly as yesterday had the 'bomb dodger' research something I thought this forum would jump all over. At least this research is some use to the world.

There's a thong? Oh yes...I thought that was a tatt.

(60? Blimey. I thought my thighs were pretty firm & meaty, but it turns out they're about 53cm. Guess that's me stuffed.)
