This won`t have cost me a tenner Dell, I don`t have a pool cover and what would I use when I brought the bike back?

I will weigh it Jay, if I ever complete it. This will be the heavy one.

Great idea, I use a padded bag to fly in and out of Barcleona, its a bugger carrying the thing around the metro to my pals apt.

I like the pillow idea too  and I'd like a zip both top and side providing 2 zip ends to lock. I like Paul's strap suggestion, why not securely stitch the strap under the base but velcro attach them to the sides for easy folding?

The weight of the velcro is not a problem it is the folding of it to make it small.

The yellow one I am doing is coming along and although it will be small, it will not be as small as the next one.

I will take some photos tomorrow. I will consider a longer zip for the next one as well. I am not even sure if it will fit the bike yet.

Well I actually put the road bike in the bag today. Fortunately I had not attached the zip.

Here is a big learner. I make sails for a living, not bike bags. I just took the measurements off the internet of a CTC bag and it is far too big. It is at least 50cm too long and 10cm too high. I can use this as a cover for my bike in the loft during winter. Plan B is already well under way and will be a lot lighter than this bag. This one weighed just over 1kg, which was too heavy for my liking. Another bad point was the cloth I made it out of. It was a great colour but it was far too loud (Crackly) when I moved it around

I will be adding zips to the top and a side on the next one. .

I have a question. Do I make it with handlebars on and turned sideways, or handlebars off ?

great stuff Steve. handlebars on and truned sideways. Bear in mind that straight bars may be a bit different to drops in overall size. Max drop bars are about 46cm. so once sideways, projecting 23cm forwards over the top of the front wheel. Straight bars are about 70cm, so projecting 35cm forwards. 12cm extra. Just in case your design had cut off corners like i suggested above!

Can I say how excited I am about this? Been a dream of mine to have something like this for a long while.

I'll second that. I've trip in June to Bilbao, 2 cardboard boxes are already in the cellar awaiting use, got to carry them through 2 train stations to the airport. For the return I've arranged to collect two boxes from a bike shop in Malaga, what a palaver!
