Not clear what work has been done on the bike - perhaps the OP should pay for any replacement parts but nothing else?

I recall £40? ... but to be honest, I've had it with this saga, more man hours than the issue warrants - if this was in my office, it would be sorted via a simple e-mail requesting the invoice. If there's no invoice, then there's no way of dealing with a tracked transaction (I run home finance the same as business finance).

If a bona fide invoice arrived with a reasonable figure, it would be processed, or dealt with via a quick phone discussion if I was not satisfied with the situation; then a confirmation e-mail would be sent with details of the final agreed resolution soon after (any agreed payment would be paid in full, using the 30 days statutory payment timing or a bit quicker to get shot of it); anyone suggesting go to the Small Claims Court, involve HRMC, Police, it's theft etc. is blowing the thing out of all proportions and obviously don't run a business ;) !

PS ... my invoice is £80 ex VAT ... I'll PM you the paperwork; it will include the full list of services undertaken, all statutory requirements and tax ref's, plus payment details will be on it.

We take all the usual forms of payment but prefer BACS ;) .

:o)

Whether HE is registered for VAT is irrelevant. He is offering a service so has to levy VAT which his customer pays. If he does not keep proper accounts and account to Customs and Excise for any sum he may owe then he is committing a fraud on the Revenue as may well the OP who if she knows or ought to know that the work is cash in hand will be free of VAT and therefore a fraud on the Revenue. If this were the case then I think may be you would have little come back if there was a problem with the work he had done if he refused to sort it out to your satisfaction.
No Crankarm, if you aren't VAT registered, you cannot charge or reclaim or even allow for VAT at all... as far as HMRC is concerned you are outside any VAT terms of reference and you run a completely VAT free organisation.

If a company is not VAT registered, because they don't have to be, they still have to pay VAT on any invoices they receive to the VAT registered companies who charge it, but they cannot reclaim any VAT they are charged, nor can they include VAT or refer to VAT on their own invoices or bills or receipts or accounts..... Only VAT registered people have to offset input and output VAT for their services and pay the balance to HMRC.

It was £40, he's knocked off £10.

I'm going to pay him next time I'm passing, don't stress Radcheinster!

This thread is turning into as much a saga as your bike has. Be a better person, rise above it, learn a lesson. He may have just been laid back, chilled, a bit of a tit!

There's more to life than stressing over these things. At least the bike's back now the weathers nice ;)

...or he may have been seriously ill... on his own, in a panic, with no-one around to help.

Without wishing to add to the unnecessary speculation and supposition surrounding his possible motivations or lack thereof, I reckon he was temporarily kidnapped by aliens, experimented upon, and returned to earth. He therefore was short of time for fixing the bike, but is still a bit "spaced out" (so to speak) by his experiences, and a bit frightened of talking about them, until he has come to terms with them and has fully rationalised the almost certainly traumatic set of experiences that has beset him.
Probably.
