Apart from weight, what is the difference between a £15 and a £30+ bike helmet?

I read this site with interest - http://www.bhsi.org/testbycost.htm

So, why should I buy expensive helmet when the cheaper one does the same job as the expensive one?

I was at a bike shop on the other day and found two similar helmets, was a very nice design. The difference was the weight and the price tag. Yes, I would have looked like a dork in the old days but the design has improved and closely looks the same as the expensive helmets.

Unless I am missing something....

A more expensive helmet might be expected to have more vents for better air flow over the bonce, a better retension system for better fit/ greater comfort, more advanced materials and construction for lower weight, better finish, a wider range of colour ways, etc

But they are all designed to conform to the same set of standards, so a more expensive helmet is unlikely to provide any more protection than an inexpensive one.

nb, it's the mold which costs money - excluding the cost of the molding machine in which the mold itself sits, the mold for a helmet costs several hundred thousand Taiwanese dollars to make. (and the more complex it is the more expensive: more vents = more dollars). And, of course, the cost of the mold comes from sales of the helmet. A high volume / inexpensive - helmet can share the cost over a bigger production run. And it follows that the mold cost is a greater proportion of the selling price of a low volume / more expensive helmet.

Because lets face it, expanded polystyrene is not an expensive material.

£15 helmet.

The retail on mine's £150 although I only paid £60 since it was last year's colours. (white with green stripes 2010 version vs. white with green flames 2011/12 version).

I like it though It's a Uvex FP1, which I got since I'm in the middle of both helmet sizes.

I guess that also makes me a complete Dork?
