Is there a website or other means of instantly checking if a bike is stolen? If not, any ideas on buying a used bike safely?

Usual secondhand vehicle trading rules apply: prefer to go to their home or business, not meet in a car park, ask about the bike, see if they seem legit, stuff like that. More tips at http://stolen-bikes.co.uk/how-to-avoid-buying-a-stolen-bike/ and they seem reasonable.

Could always make a not of the frame number and ask at your local police station

Immobilise.com is the biggest and the one the dibble endorse so your best chance of finding a match if it is hookey.

" Immobilise is offline for maintenance" and did it let the public search anyway? Some police use bike register.com instead which sucks for obvious reasons: what thief leaves a bike register code on the bike?
