my house insurance is with Hiscox. quite expensive but bikes are covered by standard policy:

Hiscox Contents Insurance provides bicycle cover as standard, there is no need to list individual bikes up to the value of £15,000 as they are automatically insured whilst stored at home. We provide cover away from home for bicycles up to the value of £3,500, provided it was locked to a fixed structure or within a locked building.

Why choose Hiscox Home Insurance for your bicycle cover?
  • Cover away from home as standard
Your bikes are covered automatically whilst away from the home up to £3,500 per bike, provided they are locked to a fixed structure or in a locked building, should you leave them unattended.
  • No need to list individual bikes valued under £3,500
You only need to tell us about any bikes worth more than £3,500 if you need cover for when you take these away from the home.
  • Need cover for more expensive bikes whilst away from the home?
We are able to increase your cover for more expensive bikes up to £10,000 individually, often at no extra charge. Just call our Insurance Experts on 0808 1150 696 to discuss.
  • Broader cover for your bikes when kept inside the home
We cover bikes whilst kept in the home up to your contents sum insured, valued up to £15,000 for any one bike. If you need cover for a more expensive bike just call our insurance experts on 0808 1150 696 to discuss. Cover for bikes in outbuildings (Where most of these are likely to be kept) is limited to £10,000.

Add your bikes as a named item to policy? Much more cost effective than a separate bike policy. Eg if /when I get a 3.5k bike, esure will charge £30 a year more. I believe a bike policy normally ends up around 10% of value

Phone your provider or look at Hiscox as above if it's renewal time

I don't insure my bikes. I don't leave them anywhere dodgy even locked and I probably wouldn't want a direct replacement.

It's called self-insurance.

Yes, you're right @User13710. I don't actually set the money aside because I know I can cover a loss. In my own personal circumstances I am calculating that it is better for me to avoid the hassle of finding a suitable insurer, paying the premiums and dealing with the insurer in the event of a loss.

I insure my home and its contents anyhow so might as well have a policy that covers my bikes as well. I wouldn't buy specific additional cycle insurance

Do you have household insurance? Most good providers cover bikes these days.

I can't quite grasp the concept that it's simpler to avoid the hassle of obtaining insurance and risk paying out for new bike(s). In my case it probably cost me 1-2 hours research against a potential loss running in to thousands, which I don't have.

Yes I do have household insurance and since I am currently planning my next N+1 I can afford to cover a loss. No two people are the same. In my case, I don't want the hassle of dealing with the insurer in the event of a loss.

Adding a bike to a household policy is a good idea if the policy is otherwise competitive. I agree that specific bike cover is not usually good value.

Bikes under £1000 are covered automatically. Over 1k you have to declare them.
There's no ridiculous restrictions on where/how they have to be locked up etc.

We had cause to make a claim a year or too ago, an assessor visited 2 days after the theft, and we had a cheque within the week for the full insured amount - no quibbles or problems.

The following years insurance was slightly more expensive, but not stupidly so, and a subsequent renewal didnt break the bank either.
All round very impressed with them.
