Bike light dilemma - Did I do the right thing?

I went to work in my car today and went to do my supermarket shop on the way home.

At the cycle parking area a bike was locked up with both back and front lights on.

I switched them off, hoping to save the batteries of the cyclist, but than worried that they'd been left on on purpose and that the cyclist may have cycled off oblivious to the fact that an interfering busy body had switched their lights off and got squished by a motorist.

Did I do the right thing?

If a cyclist got back on without noticing if their lights were off, they weren't very observant. I think you did ok.

Apart from anything else, the lights on will have been more noticeable to an opportunist thief.

I would switch them off as well, never thought it could be on purpose. Interesting one.

Should have reported it to customer services...

"This is a customer announcement... would the owner of, errrm, vehicle, errrm, bicycle... registration.... errrm... the Scott bike outside, please return to your vehicle to, errrm, turn the lights off".

hehe

You should just have left them on. The owner may have had a good reason for leaving them on. Maybe they had dodgy switches which made them difficult to switch on.

Might have been the police "bait bike" to tempt thieves - I bet the SWAT team waiting to pounce was very annoyed ;)

Just maybe he'd left them on while he was in the shop...the lights being on would make it easier for the owner to see his bike was still there, i do that sometimes.

He was probably nervously watching you Sara
