Looking to buy a decent bike lock for my new bike (Ridgeback Supernova) after spending the amount i did for the bike, i don't want someone stealing this one like my last bike. Anyone advise me on what and how much to spend?, and are D locks the answer, although there not easy to carry about, can they be broken or picked like cheap bike locks?.

The Magnum is a good 'un - I've got the slightly larger one (no cable) and a gold rated chain (that stays at work).

Make sure you fill the lock with as much of the bike as possible, and it's not too close to the ground to prevent someone getting a bottle jack into the space, and also to stop someone using those massive bolt croppers....

D-locks can apparently be opened with small bottle jacks, cable locks with tinsnips/boltcutters. Perhaps a chain & padlock would be the best thing? Might be easier to find at a locksmiths, rather than a bikeshop.

D-Locks used properly.....no better alternative.

Chain and padlock is my second defence...but that weighs 5kgs - so it's not your usual stuff... and can't be carried in a rucksack......

I have a Kryptonite New York Standard 3000. It's heavier than quite a few other D locks but weighs less than chains do.

D-locks are generally recommended to stop the opertunist thief. No lock is going to stop someone who really wants that bike. But choosing a good spot, that isn't tucked around a corner out of sight, is also going to help.
