Bike maintenance stand

Does anyone know if this stand from Halfords is any good? (see attached file). I am obviously not a professional and the stand only costs £10.99. I only want to lift the rear wheel off the floor to do gear adjustments etc.

Thanks

Brian

Loch side.
It will keep the rear wheel off the floor but once you start working on the bike or cycling the cranks, it will move around and irritate you. It is a very poor substitute for a stand that clamps the bike. However, if ultra-basic is what you are after, it will do the job. I don't know where it hooks the bike but see if you can at least turn the cranks without them hitting the stand.

I have found this type of thing to be very handy for cleaning and adjustment jobs.....

It holds the bike sufficently steady to do most maintenance jobs and there is no need to find a place to store it when not in use as it can be pulled up to the ceiling out of the way.
Lidl have a less expensive version on offer now and again.
Several variations available on ebay

I've got a lift but I do have to move bikes around to get access to it (it's fixed to a crossbeam for strength - it lifts an 18kg MTB sometimes) so for small jobs, I've also a folding double-U stand which clamps the axles and is less prone to tipping than those stupid tripods/quadrapods.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Portable-...arking-Stand-Repair-Tool-U-Type-/262152208776 is similar but you may want to get some thick-walled plastic pipe and cut your own clamps to fit your QRs or whatever better.

Thanks for your replies. I need to keep the cost down so will have a look at the 'ceiling hoist' and the 'repair tool U type' both look interesting. If you don't ask questions you will never know what's out there.

I quite like the look of the 'U' type one can cannot figure out exactly where it attaches to the bike. Any info would be appreciated. I have seen the same type for £6.69 and can make an offer on that. That seems a little too cheap to me though.

I have the one the OP is asking about. Very useful for adjusting gears when no minion is available to hold the bike! I also have a 'proper' bike stand that brings the bike up to a height where everything can be reached without breaking my aged back.

The U type usually hold the rear axle and so the rear wheel off the ground, but with different pipe bits fitted, it can hold the front.

I don't like my two hook stand because the bike tips slightly and then the top hook snags my spokes.
