I first saw them helping at a half-marathon at Windsor Great Park. It's a great idea. I can imagine they would be able to get through all kinds of traffic which would leave an ordinary ambulance stuck.

We have these in Kingston town centre, as it is mostly pedestrianised, and it works well. So far I haven't seen them attending anything, he is usually sitting in Starbucks when I go through at around 5pm!

Mr P - what were the commitments for St John's near you? I remember asking down in London years ago and they were expecting 60hours worth of volunteering in a month - that was too much at the time - I understand they train you up but that was asking for a lot.

We had one who used to spend a lot of time with local cops, he had a lovely GT Avalanche all striped up with yellow and green tape, a blue light on the front and everything. Only trouble was he was nothing to do with the County Ambulance Service, nor ST Johns, and when some locals tried to discover who he was and what he was actually doing it turned out he wasn't qualified, hadn't been CRB checked etc etc. The GT is still in our bike space taking up too much room. He tried to fight the case, but local Health Trust got very grumpy and he was eventually taken to court for various offences.

They do a brillant job. When I had to call 999, the bike medic was with me within a minute. Sadly, it was already too late, but the relief of having someone official to take charge was immense, and even in my distraught state, a tiny voice in my head was saying "Cool, it's one of the bike guys...."
