I think this is the same guy, each time I park up my bike in a specific local area I either see an older chap unlocking or locking his bike or vice-versa. I noticed this has happened three times now and a friendly guy who does say hello to me. It brings cycling another level of enjoyment because people do not tend to socialise as much when it comes to sober strangers, even saying excuse me to pass sometimes brings you a conflict with someone who manages to change "Defensive mode ON!" and back off when they are having a nice happy chat with their partner/friend.

Anyway what social enjoyments do you get whiles commuting, exercising or just cycling around for the sake of it?

I'm at my worst on a bike, when I'll talk to anyone, but I do tend to treat Deptford like a village when I'm on foot as well. I'm a member of the unofficial ''Let's Pretend it's not London'' association.

Because I rarely ride with the club these days I'm mostly out on my own on a Sunday, if I catch up with another rider or I'm caught I'll happily chat with the other rider till we go off in different directions.

I'm from Sheffield, where yabbering away to complete strangers is the norm. You can tell an out of towner by the blank stares you recieve whilst you're yabbering.
These images have put a smile on my face. Thank you both. :thumbsup:

I'll talk to anybody cycling, panniers have an unyielding attraction for me and I always want to know where the rider has been, my mind racing with interesting possibilities, "Asda" can be a disappointing reply but it can't dent my admiration for them.

I had a 5 a-side game in Keighley last month, was a Saturday morning, I decide to cycle the 12 miles there. About a mile away a woman pulled up next to me at some lights, "Hi" she said "Where are you going"?......... "Keighley" I replied "From Leeds" I let her digest that before giving the killer, "I am just going to play a football match before riding home". :thumbsup: "You"? I asked, "Blackpool" she said, and set off leaving dust on my chops. :sad:

Unless they look like a total nutter, I am happy to chat to most people. But the little town where I live is very friendly... more like a villager in attitude that a town, if you see what I mean.

I love asking others about their bikes/gear etc. I once engaged a man on a Brompton in conversation as we were both cycling up a hill, wanted to know how he found the hills on his brompton, how many gears did it have blah blah. I was on my electric bike at the time. After a bit I took mercy on him and zoomed off!

I used to work at Stanley tools where they called me the Cockney Yorkshireman. Oh, and at Bassetts where I made jelly babies. I really like the city so I'd be proud. (Though, maybe that's where I got it from....)
Well, fancy. My mum used to work at Bassets. She used to buy the misfits cheap in the factory shop. I never saw a normal shaped sweet til I was about 16!

Slightly different, but it is part of touring.

I forget how many "local secrets" I have been told about or found out talkingto strangers.

I will always say hello to passing cyclists and if someone speaks to me I will chat.
I don't tend to go out my way to start a conversation but I always smile and nod.
I don't think I could ride and chat! :bicycle::eek:
