Bike race or cycle race?

A local ex-pat newspaper has a feature on the TdF "bike race". That just reads wrong to me. Like your uncle trying desperately to be trendy but getting it wrong, e.g. 'yo dude'. Methinks 'cycle race' works better, a bike race is what you have against your friends from school... on Raleigh Choppers.

The misses offered the opinion that they perhaps didn't even need 'bike race', a simple 'Tour de France' headline was enough. If anyone didn't know what the TdF was then the article may not interest them anyway.

'Cycle Race' makes me imagine people on pedal cycles racing.
'Bike Race' makes me imagine people on motorbikes racing.

But, yes, TdF would be enough without the 'bike/cycle race' tagged on. A bit like 'The IoM TT' doesn't need 'motorbike race' tagged on
