I don't know if it is common practice but my niece's boyfriend got an email from the bike recycling charity shop that he donated a bike to. They thanked him for the donation and said that they had sold it on (after fettling) for £140 profit.

That’s a nice touch. I don’t think we do that

Could be a double edged sword, some people will feel bitter about how much the charity "made" from them.
That did flit through my mind but he seemed pleased that it had helped the charity.

I had a look on ebay last night and found a potential replacement bike for him at a bargain B.I.N. price. He is on holiday in his van this weekend near the vendor so he is going to go and check it out.

Some of the charity shops where I'm signed up as a "gift aider" send an e-mail to say how much they've made from my donation and hence how much tax they've reclaimed. I'm frequently amazed at how much they manage to sell my junk for.

I was going to post the exact same as @annedonnelly did upthread.
Yes, some charities, I guess the ones with volunteer know how, do this.

Hi. We've just set up a new community bike refurbishment, sales and education coop in Derby. We have years of experience and a high level of training from being involved with a charity that closed its doors in December. You can find us at Ayup Bikes in Derby. As you'll see, we have a bit of work to do, but we are doing refurbs right now, and if you need service, I'm sure that we can come to some arrangement.

We have now settled, and have a full workshop up and running.

As mentioned above, we are a not for profit co-op, and all of us are currently volunteers ( until the revenue grows a little more ).

You can find us at

Great stuff Malc. I'm sure @All uphill will get you on the list. I don't think you've a physical workshop yet (?) but as soon as you do I'll put you on the map.

Hi all. The music has slowed a bit, and we now have a permanent workshop open.

You can find us at

We are open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00.

We are a not for profit co-op, and we are all volunteers until the revenue picks up 😉.

If you're around Derby, and have a few hours to spare, we are growing our band of volunteer mechanics to cope with the demand from the wonderful people of Derby.

See you soon 😄
