Returning along a cycle path on the new bike yesterday I came across a youth of interminable age who, from a distance seemed to be meandering from left to right on an irregular basis. 'Uh oh, he's slightly worse for ware' I thought so I decided to give him plenty of warning of my whereabouts. Now, being a newbie and not knowing what the protocol is regarding the use of the bell and pedestrians I just thought I'd give him a couple of quick 'dring drings' and that would be it, he'd turn round and move out of my way, after all he was on the cycle path. Nada, nothing, not a thing. No acknowledgement whatsoever. Just kept on his merry way. This is when I noticed he was staring down at something which I quickly realised was obviously his phone and the reason why.
Well, you can imagine my reaction when all became clear. Unkept and scruffy youth with a backpack on a cycle path trying to find make believe animals on his phone. Yeah, no more bell warnings for you my friend. I got within four feet of him in top gear at walking pace and just yelled 'Oi' at the top of my voice. That did the trick. Poor lad verily shat himself with fright and looked at me as if I'd shot his pet dog or something. 'Ta very much' was all I said as I whipped past him and rode off into the distance with a massive grin on my face safe in the knowledge that he'd probably lost the Picachoo or whatever it was that he was looking for and also no doubt ruined his day
Made me smile so thought I share.
