Returning along a cycle path on the new bike yesterday I came across a youth of interminable age who, from a distance seemed to be meandering from left to right on an irregular basis. 'Uh oh, he's slightly worse for ware' I thought so I decided to give him plenty of warning of my whereabouts. Now, being a newbie and not knowing what the protocol is regarding the use of the bell and pedestrians I just thought I'd give him a couple of quick 'dring drings' and that would be it, he'd turn round and move out of my way, after all he was on the cycle path. Nada, nothing, not a thing. No acknowledgement whatsoever. Just kept on his merry way. This is when I noticed he was staring down at something which I quickly realised was obviously his phone and the reason why.

Well, you can imagine my reaction when all became clear. Unkept and scruffy youth with a backpack on a cycle path trying to find make believe animals on his phone. Yeah, no more bell warnings for you my friend. I got within four feet of him in top gear at walking pace and just yelled 'Oi' at the top of my voice. That did the trick. Poor lad verily shat himself with fright and looked at me as if I'd shot his pet dog or something. 'Ta very much' was all I said as I whipped past him and rode off into the distance with a massive grin on my face safe in the knowledge that he'd probably lost the Picachoo or whatever it was that he was looking for and also no doubt ruined his day

Made me smile so thought I share.

So you intentionally rode your bike at someone and yelled at them because they weren't paying attention?

Cool.

Well he did ring his bell and ride past slowly, also he has to try and live up to his name...... so really he should have flattened the guy at top speed.
I expect better next time.

Take pleasure in improving the days of others, not ruining them. You'll feel much better for it.

Returning along a road in the new car yesterday I came across a cyclist of interminable age who, from a distance seemed to be meandering from left to right on an irregular basis. 'Uh oh, he's slightly worse for ware' I thought so I decided to give him plenty of warning of my whereabouts. Now, being a newbie and not knowing what the protocol is regarding the use of the engine and cyclists I just thought I'd give him a couple of quick 'revs' and that would be it, he'd turn round and move out of my way, after all he was on the road. Nada, nothing, not a thing. No acknowledgement whatsoever. Just kept on his merry way. This is when I noticed he was staring down at something which I quickly realised was obviously his garmin and the reason why.

Well, you can imagine my reaction when all became clear. Unkept and scruffy cyclist on a road taking part in a leisure activity I don't understand or see the appeal of myself. Yeah, no more rev warnings for you my friend. I got within four feet of him in top gear at cycling pace and just blasted my horn as loud as I could. That did the trick. Poor lad verily shat himself with fright and nearly fell off his bike. 'Ta very much' was all I said as I roared past him and drove off into the distance with a massive grin on my face safe in the knowledge that he'd probably lost the directions or whatever it was that he was looking for and also no doubt ruined his day

Ride past slowly?

Not my interpretation of "whipped past"

OP. You come across very poorly in this scenario, when you have more experience you may understand better how to interact around more vulnerable but equally legitimate travellers.

Your right whipped past does seem to imply more speed than i was thinking however i was going on where he said walking speed and only four paces behind which seemed to make it unlikely that he could accelerate much as he passed. Anyway at the end of the day i don't really care that much, it's just that people were very negative and i wanted to point out that it wasn't too bad.

Reminds me of when I was running along a shared use path, all of a sudden there was a shout of "coming through", I leapt into the bushes on my left and a cyclist shot passed.

I was less than impressed.
