I work for London Underground (no abuse please I get enough at work)

There has been an increase in incidents where people return to find an extra lock on thier bike, therefore they leave it there and return later with something to cut off the extra lock.

When they return, the bike is usually gone.

The tip is to leave your own lock on the bike.

The a-holes who do this are using umbrellas to hide from the CCTC cameras so we can even see them.

The other trick is to damage the lock (break a key off in it, or break the pins with a screw driver)

In both cases the owner has to go away to fetch tools, thief moves in with cutter and if a Samaritan intervenes than there is the legitimate and plausible evidence that some lowlife has tried to nick your bike and you are trying to remove the lock they damaged in the attempt.

If this happens in either case inform the Police

Cunobelin, why would they jam a lock, then wait for you, then come back to cut it off...surely if its "jammed" they have the cover story in place to just set about it with a hack saw immediatley....theives really are thick arent they, perhaps I should consult for them, I could cut their working hours inhalf!!!

When I have spotted this happening at my station, I have put one of our station chains and locks on the bike with a note for the owner to contact station staff, so at least we can try and stop it getting nicked. Has worked everytime far.

It's probably so they can return at a more quiter time when there are less people around.

Because in a shopping centre or the likes they do not know when you will be back..... if you have to go away to collect tools etc then you will be gone for some time making the theft safer.

At stations etc it means that the average comuter will be forced to leave the bike allowing overnight for th etheft
