When you get your new bike, get it marked by the police  And make a note of serial number

Oh yes definitely, lesson learned the hard way on that one - also will use two locks this time, oh yeh and get it insured. I'm also not paying £750 this time round either!

I wasnt having a dig at you .In fact your post has just reminded me to make a note of the serial number on a folder we bought over a year ago. I sincerely hope you do get it back.

I have got the serial number of my bike, but another thing that I hope would help identify it is that I have changed pedals (well at the moment they are odd as only one changed) and headset so that the bike looks different from the standard model. I hope that those differences would show up on a photo (though not much good obviously if they just use the standard model photo in the add).

Have you tried typing the phone number he gave you into the internet to see whether he has switched to selling it elsewhere or what he has sold in the past?

Nope I understand your just making some points - but I do pay attention to details and was on bikeshd filtering all the ebay and gumtree adds - keeping eyes peeled looking at loads of adds.. I didn't just do a quick google and pick the first black bike and say 'its mine'! I wouldn't have even reported it to the Police unless I was well into the 90% zone.

I'd advise anyone reading this who ever parks their bike on streets to get serials/insurance/bike locks in order NOW... Sods law dictates that you won't get robbed if you do all this stuff anyway!

Just stop talking about and do something and let us know how you get on.

Steve

I was not necessarily sharing everything as I was bouncing between Police and here and didn't want to reveal too much - but now that I am convinced the police are doing F all anyway... I ended up texting the guy earlier this week asking if the bike is available to view to which he replied 'no sorry'.... so the likelihood is its gone. After chasing them(police) up regularly i keep getting the same response more or less: no new news, we have multiple lines of enquiry in the case, we will contact you with any developments.... Which seems like a way of saying 'stop bugging us, your case is in a filing cabinet, we're too busy filing the endless other thefts in the filing cabinet to do anything about your individual case'.

The bike was a specilized tricross Vickster.

Did you put ALL the bike details in bikeshed?
Remember this is accessable by the thief as well as you.

Unfortunately, I think too much time and too much interest has been shown in the bike.

In these instances you have to be very quick.

I am sorry to hear about your experience but I have found from my knowledge of the Met's Cycle Task Force they do a great job with limited resources and difficult legal boundaries ensuring that bikes are recovered and cycle thieves are sent to court...

This is the general advice they send out to all victims of cycle theft.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You should be contacted soon by officers from your local Safer Transport Team to get more information but some of the following generic advice may be of some use to you if you have not done it already.

1. Please report the crime in as much detail to your local Police Station in person, telephoning 101 or using the online reporting https://online.met.police.uk/ including the frame number wherever possible and as much detail including modifications and scratches and keep a note of this description.

2. Send us the details as per point 1 of your bike and ideally a picture and we will circulate it to the team.

3. If you know the frame number please visit the following three websites to register your bike and mark it as stolen. This will maximize the chances of the bike being returned to you if it is recovered by the Police. Fill in as much detail including modifications and scratches and keep a note of this description.

All these sites are Free to use.

Bike Register

www.bikeregister.com/shop/bikeregister/bike-registration

Immobilise

www.immobilise.com.

Stolen Bikes in the UK

www.stolen-bikes.co.uk

At the same time register the frame numbers of any other bikes in the household and any new ones you purchase in the future on Bike Register and Immobilise.

4. Finally keep an eye on these websites

Bikeshd

http://www.bikeshd.co.uk/

Find that bike

http://www.findthatbike.co.uk/

These two trawler sites collate adverts for bicycles placed on websites like Gumtree, Craigslist, Loot and eBay. In our experience we normally find adverts are placed within 24hrs but if not keep looking as they sometimes take a few months to pop up. It is also worth checking eBay and Gumtree as the trawler websites do not pick up all the bikes listed and bikeshd only picks up bikes for sale in London.

It might be also worth visiting and making entries on the following forums to maximize the power of 'social media';

http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/

http://www.lfgss.com/

http://www.cyclechat.net/

5.) If you see your bike please contact us on cycletaskforce@met.police.uk and we will see what we can do to help.
