I have two half decent bikes, giant road bike, Scott mtb, at the minute I hang them from my garage joists on those cheap, big red plastic covered hooks you see in many pound shops etc. With the road bike having carbon forks, and the mtb having the suspension that can be turned on or off (dont know the technical term yet!) my question is, am I doing any damage to them with the weight hanging off the front wheel, either to the forks or the top joint? Should I invest in a more conventional stand that holds them by the frame? Which I haven't really got room for but if it is the preferred option I will have to make room

This was in the adjacent thread to yours:

You are more likely to damage the wheel if you hang the bike from it, but a bit of care should prevent this - the carbon fork will happily take that weight. I prefer my bike to hang the right way up, but then I have the space.

I am unsure of the suspension fork though, I know that they shouldn't spend long upside down, but that is all I have heard of.

I thought most people kept there bikes next to the bed or at least in the house, no ?
With two grown up teenagers, mrs broughtonblue and a big dopey labradoor in the house I don't have the room, unless I made one of them move out. Alas I love my dog to bits so it wouldn't be him, how do I decide between the other three?

Hanging your bikes from the front wheel will do no damage whatsoever to the wheel, the road fork, the frame or the headset bearing.

You might scratch the rim anodizing if your hooks lose their plastic coating, and you have a one in 32 chance of bashing the valve whenever you hang your bike. But that's it.

However, it's worth checking with the manufacturer that the suspension fork on your MTB is ok being stored upside down. Some don't like it. Some pish oil out onto the carpet.

And take care if you have hydrolic brakes on the MTB - they may not like being upside down.
