Bike thief caught by the owner

That was what raised my faith in the justice system. It was getting caught that demolished it.

I'm not a lawyer, but that sounds like an assault, and I don't think you are entitled to assault someone just because they stole your property.

You may have to move to Florida.

If you shove them to stop them nicking your stuff? Like this:

I just wondered if, for example, someone rode past you on your bike and you gave them a shove to stop them and they fell off and were injured, would that be ok?

Big grey area, and whilst it's not written in law, the injury they sustained would probably be the deciding factor, as if I turned up and the thief had a bruise and some damage to his pride, I'd be congratulating you and taking him in.

If he had bleeding to the brain from banging his head, it'd probably be you bring brought in, though I would empathise with your position.

It's a tricky one and there is no 'right' answer.

I just ask because if I saw someone riding by on my bike, I think my instinct would be to make a grab for it as the fella in the video I posted did. My rational brain though, tells me this could injure the rider.
