just in case there is any-one that doesn't use this fantastic route planner I thought I'd show a typical loop. In fact it is the one I did tonight.

Notice that you get a profile of the all hills throughout the route and
Total mileage.
Total height climbed
Plus if you click on any point on the profile a corresponding flag appears on your map to show you exactly where that hill starts and where the highest bit is.
Experiment with different loops to miss the hilly bits or maybe find some hills to train on.Check the mileage and have some fun

It's good, but I've never figured out why on a circular route it never makes the climbing and descent the same.

the elevation is measured in metres but the total climb is given in feet. I have no idea why.

When you are plotting your route you end with a double click ,its difficult to end exactly where you started if the scale is small in order to get your whole route on the screen at once.

Whilst you are plotting your route you can move the map up and down etc by clicking anywhere on the map and holding the mouse key down whilst you move the map then release and it shouldn't muck up your map plot.

It is frustrating. You need to avoid clicking near any road juctions or it sends the route off in odd directions and you have to start all over again.

The way to avoid spurious route lines is to click well before any junctions then click after the junction and the map will draw your route across the junction

The feature i like best is if you turn off the elevation data you get an OS map of what you're looking at on the main map. You can swap them around to make the OS map the main one.
Only downside is that OS only allow them so many free tiles each day, once they're used up you get a blank screen.

does anyone know how reliable bikehike is?

I am looking to calibrate my polar computer and the ascending/descending amount differs...even ignoring the actual absolute amounts...
seems I am pretty close on tyre circumference so that helps

just tootled to richmond park for it so that should be a good reference, I hope

glad I got back before the heavy rain!

If you go for a FNRttC david, calibrate your Polar when you arrive at the seaside...;)

Yes, this is a very good tool & can be really useful to plan a route. However don't take it as gospel it doesn't have a number of bridleways & cycle paths which don't follow roads. As well as erroneous data about rights of way (ie it'll direct you through private roads in the middle of a factory to divert you going down a nice piece of single track road). Also there seems to be some interesting elevation data on it, according to bike hike there's a 25%, yes twenty five, incline up my works drive  ;) erm... NO! more like 2.5%!
