This is not a rant, just a genuine interest in different people's views and behavioural patterns.

Imagine that you are arriving at your bikepark at work. It is shared by a number of different employers. It is quite large. There are always plenty of available spaces. Someone is arriving just behind you. You go to park your bike. You do not park your bike in the same space each day. Someone comes up to you and says: "Excuse me, can I just get my lock?" Their lock is attached to the D-stand where you have just wheeled up your bike.

What do you say/do?

move to another spot and let them use the one they've left their lock at, it's no hassle to me.

A bit of tolerance and sharing on both your and his/her part? Putting a lock on one stand doesn't make for ownership of that space, and the other person clearly realises that by the way they asked.

What happened, exactly?

Sounds like he was just after his lock and not the stand? I sometimes leave a lock at work not to bag a space but because I can't be bothered to lug the thing backwards and forwards everyday.

I'm guessing B&B's post is a bit of reverse phsychology here and it was actually him that left the lock. I'd have posted the same answer whichever way he phrased it.

It was my lock. As I say, not a rant because I appreciate putting a lock on a stand doesn't equate to ownership of that stand. Indeed some people put locks on and never seem to use them (judging by the accumulation of dust). I also label my lock with my name, work address and contact numbers/email (a hangover from my previous bikepark where space was at more of a premium and I didn't want my bike removed if I happened to have left it overnight - or indeed my lock removed if I was on holiday). To me, this indicates that the lock is in regular use. But that could just be me.

I leave my lock attached to the stand more out of convenience than anything else.

It is a bit of a pain untangling it from beneath another person's bike (I have a cable attached to a D-lock, and it can get tangled underneath wheels, as happened this morning - in fact the person in question almost had to remove their bike to allow me access to my lock). But it's no biggie.

If the roles were reversed, I would probably have offered up the space to the person removing their lock.

But I am not offended that the person in question this morning did not do so.

i leave me lock on the stands at work. as do many others, i use the same stand day in day out. there are hunderds of racks at work, so i see no reason why someone would use the one i use.

in answer to your question, did you do anything wrong. no.

quick question, where is your office in london, sounds like your car park is like mine.

New Street Square off Fetter Lane.

Perhaps it irks me more than I care to admit - otherwise why post?? I suppose if that's all that gets up my nose today then it will be a good day!!

I leave my lock on the stands at work; I'm the first cyclist in so I'm not depriving anyone else. There are many, many stands anyway to there's room for everyone.

But back to the OP - if it was me, I'd just move and let them have the stand so long as there were other free places. If not, I'd ask if they minded sharing the stand with me.

That was clever!, don't think I would have looked at it from that angle - would have done the same though and moved to another space if there were any.

I hadn't considered leaving the lock either - it's easily the heaviest single item in my bag!

Maybe I'm just a bit thick!
