Why did Rob Penn have to ruin the whole show with that dreadful paint job at the end.

He must be colour blind.

Over £4k on a bike and it looks like it was based on the drawings of a 4 year old.

Not a bad programme though, shame some firms need to be so secretive.

The Peugeot bike featuring in the Tom Simpson reconstruction footage has rack eyelets

Luckily with my lack of knowledge I was able to miss all those points!!

Loving this Tom Simpson film.

I am too - it was an interesting insight into the world of cycling back then - was the information (if you exclude the bike) in the program pretty accurate?

Good program, another vote here for the disaster of a paint job. Mrs VC ecxlaimed at one point '90 quid for a saddle!'. I looked at my feet not wanting to catch her eye.

Yup. They used pressed steel Simplex ends and dropouts with mudguard eyelets.

They used Nervar lugs; and Nervar BB shell with the French Thread.

My Pug has all this. French thread cups are like rocking horse shoot, and that's why the bike only does about 100 miles a year.

I have yet to watch the Tom Simpson programme.

Was it the bike that Chris Sidwells had in his shop?

Did it have ornate schroll lugwork painted black? Half chrome forks and stays? Simplex front mech that was the 'sliding sideways' design and a Simplex rear mech in magnesium alloy, not DuPont plastic?
Mafac 'Racer' brakes, GB stem and bars with bar end shifters; and a tatty Brooks B17 Narrow on an alloy plain seatpost with a 'saddle clip' not a microjust.
Miche Normandy wide flange hubs with Mavic sprint rims and Michelin tubs?

Did the Mafac 'Racer' brakes have Salmon pink blocks?

If the answer to all these questions is 'yes', it's Chris' bike. It was his Xmas present in 1966.

Yes that art student was certainly not in need of support. Couldn't see her BB or nipples though.

I was disappointed at how soon the programme ended - he could have lingered a bit longer on the finished bike and the ride qualities. I enjoyed the bit where they rode up to the Italian cyclists' chapel.

I thought Rob Penn did a good job there. He cast a nod at the very old stuff (penny farthings etc) briefly enough to not lose my interest, but it was fun to try and guess which manufacturer he was visiting when you knew the city they were in. I 'got' Chris King before he mentioned it, but I thought the Clothing company was going to be Oregon Cyclewear (I have some of their gear) but it was actually Rapha! The guy from Rapha was going on about sustainability and the economy and simplicity of cycling - but he's from Rapha FFS! I wanted him to tell us how much their gloves cost

Not a fan of the colour scheme either, I'd have gone for plain orange all over possibiy.

It was about half an hour.

(I quite liked the paint job in the end - to my great surprise...when he selected 'blue & orange' I did think 'Do WOT John?')

Oh, and am I the only one who thought those rims looked a bit wide for a racer? They looked to me like hey were designed for, say, 28s rather than 23s.

I thought the Brooks was out of place. What were the DT Swiss rims, they looked like a semi deep section which also didn't seem to suit, didn't think much of the paint job either.
