Ok what's the deal with the birds singing outside my window in the early hours? I know, I know, we should stop selling them cheap cider! !

No seriously, 2am this morning the flipping dawn chorus kicked off and then never stopped. I know it's mild for November but surely they realise it's still dark!!!

Have they just flown in from Russia, or somewhere east, and are still not used to the time change?

It used to puzzle me why blackbirds sing so melodiously on mild wet nights. I came up with the theory that they were like young children unable to sleep on Christmas Eve. They know that the soft wet soil will bring nice juicy worms to the surface for breakfast.

Of course this theory may have no grounding in fact but I don't really care because I like the idea.

I like that idea DM and I think it rings true. As my lawn looks like it has the worm version of the Battle Of the Somme at the moment...

Nice pic Reivers. The gorse often flowers twice round here as well.

The nocturnal song is probably a Robin. Luckily their song is beautiful at any time. It doesn't take much at dawn to get them going, and they sing into the dusk anyway, so other light sources can set them off, as can disturbances of some kind.

Like TC I reckon it might be a robin as well. Last winter there was a part of a ridiculously over-lit cycle path in Cambridge where I'd often hear a robin singing well after dusk. I guess the light pollution confuses them. Luckily there's none of that here- nice and dark.
