A good friend of mine commutes on that route into the city every weekday.
I know that he rides in the 'primary' position and is very assertive and confident in traffic.
I hope it's my friend who's p*ssing off Meldrew.

Have you seen the plan? Single lane in each direction. Rubbish.

Hmm yeah but the relief road to the new hospital should take some traffic away from Selly Oak Triangle - I haven't seen the plan for a few years now but did have a look at the new road around the New Hospital site.

Oh and here is the "Dual carriageway" A38 Bristol Road now.
http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/Media?MEDIA_ID=260167

he New Road is fundamental to the regeneration and revitalisation of Selly Oak Centre. The New Road will provide an alternative route for through traffic. The through traffic, particularly heavy goods vehicles will be discouraged from using the existing Bristol Road by the implementation of environmental improvements for the benefit primarily of pedestrians, cyclists and buses. The improvements include the following:
  • Reduction in carriageway width. The existing four 2.5 metre wide sub standard lanes will be replaced with two 3.65 metre wide lanes.
  • Better facilities will be provided for buses (showcase standard) including where possible bus priority measures.
  • Provision of a bus interchange on Bristol Road between Oak Tree Lane and Chapel Lane for the Outer Ring Road and Bristol Road services.
  • Facilities will be provided for cyclists, including cycle parking and cycle links.
  • Parking facilities will be provided along the road.
  • Footways will be widened to give more space to pedestrians.
  • Trees will be planted and street furniture replaced.
  • The environment will be made safer for pedestrians and cyclists as a result of the removal of through traffic.
  • Enhancement of junctions of side roads with Bristol Road.

So Mister P is probably going on Thursday....anyone else? I think several students from uni are going plus the cycling provisions committee. I haven't decided yet....free food and a chance to meet a famous forummer might influence the decision!

My Garmin doesn't know the cycle routes, so I take the main carriageway, even Queensway tunnel under St Chads - stand up, push hard and go with it !!!

Oh my god I can't believe anyone would cycle through that thing! I avoid going through it when I have got the top down on my car!! The air quality is soooo poor through there you can taste the pollution!!! You could easily go in one and and not come out the other through death and not actually from being hit by a car!!

I was thinking about going along on Thursday night too if anyone was interested!

I have gone via Kings Norton and over Egg Hill - great view of the city and surrounding countryside (through the sweat and tears!). That way did come up as shorter than my normal route (KH/Stirchley/Selly/California/Halesowen/Blackheath/Cradley Heath/Merry Hill) which didn't feel right (I'm not convinced of the readings).
I really don't like the thin dark bit of country lane coming home near Illey though, cars come flying round the blind corner, there could be a car coming the other way, and with the high sides to the road there's nowhere to go. It's going uphill too so I'm not going quick.
The Blackheath way is fairly innocuous. I could do you bikely routes if you're interested.

The clock is ticking however as our office is moving to Warwick, which is going to change everything. I'm wondering if it's worth starting to resent Chiltern Trains now, just to save time.

If I go to Googlemaps and go from Kings Norton Business Park (B30 3HG) to Halesowen Town Centre it says :
1st bit is down Middleton Hall Road - Could I cut across the park opposite the Business Park ?
2nd Question is Bell Hollow, Then Merrit Hill - Coming from Kings Norton is this better than going down Shenley Lane/Barnes Hill and coming out at the California Fire Statoin ?

The Merrits Hill bit goes past the Resevoir then onto Adams Hill so this looks like it saves the uphill slog from California Fire Station to the Top of Woodgate Valley.

Thanks

Cracking. Maybe someone'll post about it, otherwise I gues there'll be news up on pushbikes at some point.

Hopefully the council didn't spend too much time looking worrried, muttering something about Iceland, and asking to borrow a fiver.

I went - the map was covered with post-its detailing specific issues which people felt needed addressing and that will be looked at and all notes recorded in the next week.

All sorts of things came up, in particular shared use cycle lanes, promoting cycling, and blanket 20mph limits on all roads bar the major arteries. Those were the main points which I remember - I meant to take notes but I left my pen and pad at the back of the room

I reckon you have 2 options. 1 is to just turn a right & go straight up the hill into Cotteridge & then left onto Middleton Hall Rd. The alternative is to cut through the park - carry straight on along Wychall Lane/Rd - over the railway bridge at the top & then take a right up Woodland Rd to join Bunbury Rd.

Bumping this for myself ! I have to do this route Friday !!

Not totally relevant, but still significant to cycling in Edgbaston - anybody noticed that the Bournbrook Road lights have been turned off? I predict a serious accident involving a car and a pedestrian within the next couple of months.

Say hi when you pass me

I saw a Roadie by the Resevoir.

I went Rea Valley Route to Northfield, Went too far and had to come off there and ride up the hill up a one way road past a nice Church. Then Left and Right uptoward Northfield Town Centre. Then over and up another steep narrow road coming out at the Resevoir and then over the hills to Lapal and down onto the A456.

Not keen really, Rea Valley is bumpy and full of dog walkers so it's a slow pace so may go down Middleton something Road.

Still amazing how from Uni to Selly Oak on the Canal is flat but by road it's uphill !!
