To be fair to the driver he probably just had an explosion of adrenalin on suddenly seeing two cyclists whizz narrowly past. He may have been acting out of character. Anyway, more important making sure that your wife is OK and getting the bike checked over for safety.

Exactly, much more constructive way of thinking than just jumping in and pointing blame - plus 'tis all over now in any case. The bike seems OK, now I've straightened out the rear wheel. I took it up and down the road and all seems good, though will have to do a structural check on the frame later (should be all right though, it is a pretty bomb proof steel frame). It needs some new rear pads (as well as a new saddle now) anyway, so we'll take it into the LBS tomorrow and ask them to give it a quick once over.

Bloody good idea. If she pampers Chris a bit it'll take her mind off the whole affair.

Haha, well I've just stuck a cake in the oven and got a pot of tea on the go... which combined is about as close to a cure-all as you can get. Poor wifey took a much nastier tumble than any I've suffered, and she's always looked after me following my moronic over-the-bars adventures, so she'll definitely be well looked after 'til she heals up nicely. What with the state of her hands I'll definitely be doing all the washing up for the forseeable too!

Definitely makes you stop and think just how vulnerable you are on these wonderful-but-slightly-crazy contraptions.

Put the pots to one side, give her something to look forward to......

No seriously live on takeaway until she is better......

Okay I'm kidding, hope she has a speedy recovery and that it doesn't put her off getting back on the bike.

She'll be alright getting back on the bike, I think... We're planning on riding into town together tomorrow to pick up the necessary bits and bobs for the bike. We've both commuted by bike since our student days so it's pretty well integrated into our lifestyles and she's a confident cyclist (definitely more fearless than I am on descents!). Bound to be a little cautious at first, but fingers crossed she'll get that confidence back after a little while.

Ouch! Mrs CE will be a bit sore for a few days but plenty of Neurofen and Paracetamol will help. In a week or two you'll be dining out on the story and you'll be the better cyclists for having thought about it and rationalised it all in your heads. Top marks for getting straight out and sorting the damage, a good way of dealing with the trauma of an accident. See if you can find a saddle called a Charge Ladle, very comfortable.

Ouch, glad to hear that the damage wasn't too severe (nothing broken at least). Best wishes to your other half and hope she's not too stiff this morning.
Might be an idea to change the seatpost as well if the saddle took that much of a whack, I've had one snap about 3 weeks after an 'off' and it looked fine but must have cracked in the spill (ally seatpost in a steel frame)

Back from the LBS, with a nice new comfy saddle fitted. So far looks like the only damage to the frame/forks is a few scratches - though I'll keep an eye on the seatpost, thanks @raleighnut. The wheel still has a little hop left in it after I trued it up, but was pronounced good to go by the mechanic there... So all good on the bike front!

Mrs E is still pretty sore and the ride into town was hard work for her (she has gripshift gears which are hard to use with busted hands, plus she discovered a whole new set of aches and pains this morning), but it's fantastic that the fall hasn't knocked her confidence on the bike too much.

Thanks again all for all the kind wishes
