I'm scouting around for a source of interesting, colourful, possibly embroidered gandhi jackets or frock coats - largely so that I don't have to wear that abomination, the black bow tie.
I like bow ties on the rare occasions I go to black-tie events, but the last one I was at there was a chap with a dress shirt with a black stud at the collar, and that was won instead of a bow-tie. It did look rather natty.

Blimey, you men and your complicated shoes.

You wouldn't understand these things Arch, we're very sensitive when it comes to fashion - anyway shouldn't you be getting on with some welding or whatever it is you girls busy yourselves with. B)

I wear three pairs of shoes on a regular basis. My steel toed workshoes, my day to day trainers, and my spd shoes (mostly on a non spd bike, but worn for the stiff soles.)

Very rarely, I 'dress up' and wear a pair of suede look plimsoll type shoes from Next.

About once a decade, I wear some 'smart' shoes.... And I can never wait to get out of them.

Best idea has already been suggested. Go to eg Slaters and hire the entire outfit. If you aren't a fashionista just go for what the hire shop suggests. Black studs in a Nehru collar look good if you can carry it off, but classic is always good. A friend of mine worked for Slaters and they offer really good stuff for these occasions

Gordon Bennett. The cafe is even more obtuse than my usual playground. I meant the website was written by a social-climbing snob.

Dell's got a good point, actually. If you want to pull, you might do better turning up in a scruffy lounge suit. I was assuming this was one of those tedious dinners where the objective of everyone present is to get as pissed as possible as quickly as possible.

Men's formal dress is very dull. I'm scouting around for a source of interesting, colourful, possibly embroidered gandhi jackets or frock coats - largely so that I don't have to wear that abomination, the black bow tie.

Aww what a let down. I rather liked the idea of being a socal climbing snob:biggrin:

The reason I say that is that it can either not fit right and with a white tux, it can draw the attention of a lot of people as it's not often worn- if you're not used to black tie attire - this might be too much.

Your best bet is to hire something from one of the shops mentioned as it won't cost too much- they can steer you towards something that has a bit of personality to it if you wanted it.

Agreed the white one isn't such a good look due to its James Bond connotations. A trainee accountant friend of mine used to wear one, he eventually stopped after all of the "Licenced to Audit" comments he was on the tail end of ;)

Depends whether they are serving spag bol at the dinner....

The problem with a white tuxedo is that you tend to be mistaken for a waiter. No, you really do. Also, it probably works best in warm weather, rather than the current chilly spell. Looking like Bryan Ferry also helps.

Plus, the thing is if you want to wear a white tux, it has to be really good quality and look good on. Plus having the confidence to carry it off is the key ingredient. If it's your first time at a black tie event it's not recommended.
