I doubt if they would need bleeding after 3 years. If you do bleed them, it's best to remove the pads and put a spacer in between the calipers, some bleed kits include this.
The brake pads don't last that long in my experience, 1,000 - 1,500 miles in hilly country.

A lot of riders seem to think that the life of bike disk brake pads is like in their car - about 20k miles - which they don't. You always need to check them regularly. I'd recommend changing them when the thickness of the pad material & backing plate in less than 3mm

Shimano say 1mm.

That's pad material thickness which is hard to measure - easier to include the backplate and a pair of calipers to measure
