Its a SHARED path...so share it.would you ring a bell when walking on the pavement, if other people were walking slower than you?
It's a cycle track that people are permitted to walk on (probably). Walkers approaching other walkers tend to say excuse me (or just barge past in many big cities) but that doesn't work for cycling because by the time you can be heard without shouting, your front wheel is already too close for most people, so a bell is better.

Relax, don't ring bells as a passive aggressive means of demanding space, wait and pass with a good morning...when its safe.
Don't sneak up on people like that, but ring bell gently to announce your presence and slow to be ready to stop unless the walker beckons you past.

And please don't do punishment passes. Cyclist hate those, why shouldn't other people.
Agreed.

Ah I see the problem straight away, dog walkers are suppose to stand on one side of the path and the dog on the other with a 30 foot lead across the said path.
Yep I missed a trick didn't I

With greyhounds tho, a retractable lead is right out of the question, they'd be doing 30mph by the time it ran out and either their necks or my arms would come out of it very badly.

Had that on the Christiania

Dog ran across, too late to do anything, I thought at first I was going to run it over

Rapid braking, but not before the lead had been yanked out of the owners hand and jerked the dog off its feet

Here for rides.
I'm with the stand still and don't budge brigade.

More than one cyclist has been offed as a result, nobbers.

As to dog owners, the only good dog owner is the one that clears up the dog's faeces after the dog has done its business. Nowhere near enough good dog owners where I live.

I used to come across a couple of Labradors on the cycle path on the way into work. One call from teh owner, they would cross to the edge, sit and wait

Never caused a problem

Great.

I see your two labradors and raise you several hundred dogs locally about whom the owners should say "one word from me and that dog does as it pleases."

Since I took up running I encounter dogs, and poorly managed dogs, far more often than I do when cycling.

Are you sure, never seen one of those around my neck of the woods, seen bridleways that cyclists are permitted to use, seen footpaths which although cyclists are not specifically allowed to use, under most circumstances it is acceptable if they give way to walkers.

The art of standing still

This was suggested to me some yeras ago and works well.

Simply stand still, and let others flow around you. Works in most cases
Aye on my own I would but less easy with 2 big dogs, to predict all the variables particularly when the riders were so determinedly not helping the situation

He was most likely fed up with being "forced" off the path and being stung on the ankles by nettles.

No he was an ignorant twat and got what was coming to him, so maybe I should have just sneaked up behind him and then let rip with the bell or give him fair warning that someone wants to pass?, after all like you said it's a SHARED path, something that was lost on this clown

I use the bell out of curtesy in a none aggressive way, most folk I meet are happy make room, this guy was just a knob head

Near me is a nature reserve called Wicken Fen and it has an off road cycle path running through it. I'm all for the give and take and 90% of the time have no problem with dogs though I must admit it does grate that so many folks drive miles to get there, clogging up narrow lanes just empty their dogs in the area.

It's also a very well used cycle path and yet many dog owners seem surprised to see someone on a bike. I can never work that one out! Then there's all the $hite everywhere- often in little bags lobbed into hedges. And so many dog owners seem to have no idea about the countryside- risks to ground nesting birds/ livestock etc.

Most are fine though but a minority often don't seem to have any control over dogs. Just today there was a couple with 7 or 8 small dogs, none on a lead, on the cycle path on a nature reserve and completely out of control. Bonkers really. These are the types who seem to relish a confrontation for some reason, but I'm long past interacting with any of them. I just slow right down or stop, ignore them walk past and then carry on with a sigh.

We were riding around Ladybower reservoir the other Sunday, we came around a corner & there were 5 MTB's riding line abreast coming up the hill, they were not giving way to anybody, I made a loud voiced comment of "Don't worry lads we'll all get out of your way" to receive a "Well said lad" from one of the walkers who had had to get off the road for them, unfortunately they will always be ignorant, arrogant people.
