But I seem to have sparked off a bit of an international incident.
Sorry.
I got chased by some French dogs once (when I was in France).

It was made worse by the fact that I was on the gite owner's Apollo Full Suss, so at least half my pedalling effort went into making the bike pogo up and down alarmingly while I desperately tried to remember how to say "Bugger off!" in French (settled on "Casse Toi!" in the end).

Well, all credit to you for 'trying to remember'. Personally, I never knew the French for "Bugger off!" Having said which, household tip #37 - dogs don't actually speak the language. Being dogs & all. Try 'woof!' - but in a very angry aggressive tone. They're like foreigners - they only pretend not to understand, and if you say it loud enough...

I think the phrase you were looking for is "en coulez" which bizarely translates are "some flow" but I think actually means go away with attitude.

i once saw an aggressive dog barking and chasing a few clubmates while negotiating a rather difficult climb. as i knew i would not have anything like the power in my legs that my clubmates had i knew i'd have to improvise.

as soon as i approached it and it made a move towards me, i did my best impression of a cat's angry meow/air raid warning.

stopped the little ****er in his tracks

I hate dogs. They're the pain of my commute.

I ride along cyclepaths which might as well be called dog walking paths.

Hi viz and flashing lights also seem to turn the quietest most well controlled dog into something that has a taste for blood.

Crankarm, were you out jogging in my neck of the woods over the weekend?

I was out with one of my dogs, off to the side of the path when a jogger approached from behind. He stopped dead in his tracks and said "Excuse me could you..." I turned the dog around to see that there was someone coming, as I did so the jogger realised that I had him on a lead.

"....oh....Is he allright?"

I think he/you should make the effort to find out a little about dogs to help with your fears.

In the meantime, this will sort out the jack russel; and bigger dogs too - though probably not a dog in full attack mode that genuinely wants to kill you, costs about £5 or £6.
