Bloody hell - the cost of pulling things off

That'll get Fnaar's attention... Bearings feel a bit rough on my chainset and thought I'd do a DIY change.. until I looked at the price of the tools

208 quid to get it off and 108 to get bearings back on again... bearings about 20-25 quid makes 330 quid

a new chainset is only 290 quid.

I have a new set of cups and I have the cup insertion tool. I'll just bring it down to local car tool place and I'm sure I'll be able to find a puller that fits for about 20-30 quid.
LBS may have something - I do like having my own tools though. LBS ain't that local, and I normally attack these things at night and have bike wrenched for following morning. A piece of plastic pipe and vice should get the bearings pushed on.. I think I have the bits necessary for that.

You can make your own for £5 - get a bearing puller off eBay and file the ends down so they slide under the bearing.

Park do one for £50 and I saw one recently for around £15 but have lost the link - I'm sure someone will come along with the info.

I think that price of these tools is a shameless licence to print money - same with cars - they deliberately go out of their way to make components that can only be fitted using special tools, then they charge extortionate amounts for the tools.

It's daylight robbery and an abomination.

A particularly irksome example is bottom bracket fixings - these are never ever made so that a simple spanner or monkey wrench can be used to loosen and tighten them (although they could easily be designed so that you could use a spanner), instead they are designed so that you have to pay for an incredibly expensive adaptor - on which you can use a spanner.

I'm happy with heavier 8 speed gear sets.My £18(now £25?) Aldi (36 piece?) tool kit has stood me in good stead for the last 5 years.
