If they were pointless, they wouldn't exist. In fact they pollinate a wide range of meadow plants and for some - although not in the UK - they are the only pollinators.

Are you sure ? At first sight at least, i would a bit suprised if a bloodsucking insect was going in flowers looking for pollen - or is the dinner stomach & pudding stomach?
Joking aside, sounds implausable, though entymology is not my field admittedly

They predominately feed on nectar and pollen, but the females need a diet of blood to ensure successful reproduction.

Mr Horsefly = good
Mrs Horsefly = bad

Ah - fair enough - it is dinner stomach and pudding stomach then - though it was just people, but seems to be lady horseflies as well. Who'd have thought it.

Sodding things! I Just got bitten on the knuckle while taking Photos in the garden :cursing:

Why do they always bite at joints?

For years the medical profession believed in the 4 humours and that all illness was an imbalance of these

As a result bleeding was a preferred treatment for many illnesses

Perhaps this is a Karmic joke and Horseflies are in fact reincarnated physicians?

Had a couple so far this year, left calf and the nasty one behind my left ear couple of lovely itchy lumps, thankfully I have an ammonia stick which removes said itching.

So typically opposite to us then...Mrs R...sweets, chocolate, cake, honey, Me...black pudding, steak, bacon, steak, ham, steak..
Mr Horsefly....sweets, chocolate, cake, honey....you can see where this is going....

My last horsefly bite was on my forearm and swelled up so much it looked like someone had shoved half an orange under my skin and felt like somone had blowtorched my arm. Since then I go nowhere outside without Jungle Formula 50% DEET
