We went to take some copper cylinders to the EMR depot in Bedford a few years ago at the height of the metal price boom. It was like a scene out of Mad Max, absolutely heaving with very dodgy-looking individuals and their booty. They pay in cash but I believe there is some talk of making scrappies pay by cheque so that there is some way of tracing who bring church roofs etc along.

Yes, I believe that comes in on 13th of dec this year.

although I'm sure some scrap yards will carry on with cash but paying slightly less than they would be doing by cheque.

before the local travellers even showed up i dropped a broken down tumbler in my front garden (i'm off road too) it was gone within 2 days, scrappies must have had off.
shame there's no one out there nicking old couches and other general household waste eh?

They're a bloody menace with their thieving, if it's not fastened down they'll steal it! I hate the way they slowly drive down back streets peering over peoples back yards/gardens seeing if there's anything to take. It's very intimidating!
Still if there aren't any jobs out there then can you blame someone for trying to make a living, even if it's from illegal activity?!

I must confess that down our last house if we had bulky items to get rid of we used to just put them in the front garden, most things would go over night, the council would charge for disposing of bulky items and we saved ourselves a packet like that.

They helped themselves to a van load of metal at the farm yesterday. Some of it was scrap but the bale spike that goes on the forklift wasn't. The bloke who found them tried to grab the keys from the ignition but they'd allready got it into gear and he had to let go. The police turned up a few minutes later but the van was long gone by then.
I disturbed a couple earlier this year that were snooping around, they didn't get anything then.

Hah, you're lucky it was just your gate. I got home the other night and found the garden was missing and some strange bloke who must have been shagging my missus answered the door when I couldn't get my key in the lock .

Turned out it was the wrong house.....................

Pfft, I went away on holiday once and when I came back both my house and garden were missing. Nothing, just a big hole in the ground.

Not having a go at you personally but maybe people not disposing of their own valuable and recycleable rubbish properly while expecting/hoping the local thieves will remove it for them just encourages it to happen.
I wouldn't say the cost of disposal was 'saved', more like the value of the scrap was lost.

I have had people drive past and even come onto my property to try and take my property. Some will ring the doorbell just to check if witnesses are in but I have lost items that were not rubbish (but still mine even if it was rubbish).

I removed 20' of 5" square cast iron Victorian rainwater pipes from the front of my house. The brackets were damaged and so I removed the pipes for safety while I was making up new brackets. Someone then stole them from my drive despite them being covered and stowed away.

There is only one word for people like this, criminals.

Not strictly true. You could also have: delinquent, evildoer, felon, guilty party, malefactor, miscreant offender,transgressor, wrongdoer and so on.

My ex GF lived near a caravan site. One day someone asked if they could take the car battery they had been using to prop their gate open. They said no, but the next morning the battery had mysteriously vanished. They had to give up leaving washing on the line overnight, because too many items managed to unpeg themselves and completely disappear.

We had washing go missing right up until I joined a band that wore wrestling masks on stage and it was my turn to do the kit wash after a gig.
