I have an LG LCD widescreen telly hooked up to a panasonic blu-ray. Yesterday a mate called round and we decided to watch The Hobbit extras. Oddly, when I played them, they were all in 4:3 aspect ratio, which wasn't correct as circles .ie Bilbo's door, looked a bit 'squashed'. I fiddled with the player - no change. I set the TV aspect to 16:9 - no change. It wasn't having any of it, so we sat through them in 4:3:blush:.

I played Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit 3D discs just to check - played in full 16:9 no problems. TV will adjust to widescreen or 4:3 when watching telly, so what's going on?. I have watched the extras before in 16:9, so why did the player or TV decide to reduce everything?. Mildly annoying:sad:. My mate said that sometimes he's noted that the extras aren't encoded properly so sometimes come out a bit wrong. Is he correct and can anyone shed some light on this?. Thanks:thumbsup:.

Yes he is correct. Sort of. Not that they aren't encoded properly. Just that they are in a different aspect ratio.
It usually says on the box somewhere.
