Your laptop needs to support the A2DP Bluetooth profile. Anything from the last few years will but some older laptops might not. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to tell if you have support except Googling or trying to pair with an A2DP Bluetooth receiver though.

There's another potential issue I've come across from time to time. Bluetooth uses 2.4GHz as does older WiFi (802.11b/g/n). I've encountered an issue where they conflict i.e. WiFi slows down or stops when streaming to Bluetooth or even when Bluetooth is on.
If was thinking of buying a hifi system and I notice that some are "Bluetooth Compatible" . So if my computer is Bluetooth enabled (which I think it is,it is an older laptop probably 2008 running win 7) Would this mean that I would be able to configure something so that I could listen to youtube videos through the hifi - or does it not work like that. I was hoping to avoid having to plug in cables.

Please feel free to explain it all to me as if I was a 7 year old.
You could just get a speaker with bluetooth and forget about the hifi ^_^
Chromecast Audio is better though. Plug one of those into your hifi and you can cast through your home network. It's more reliable and frees up the device you're casting from.
Don't you need compatible software though? As far as I know only web players such as Google Play Music work with it. I'd love to be able to use desktop Spotify with it (Spotify on my phone works though).
