A blast from the past here but for the info of anybody going down this road, Portland Design Works guards can be made to fit the original mounting points quite nicely

The bikes got 28mm tubeless on with no clearance issues

You can get guards now that fit to through axle on a disc brake set up.
They aren't cheap at around £120. - £150. A guy at our club has some and rates them very highly. They look totally bombproof.

Personally I would helicopter tape down the rear of the downtube. Bits of mud could build up and begin to finely scratch the paint.
