OK, so their mechanic appears to have identified the source of the leak - the timing chain cover on the back of the engine. He showed me with a mirror and it looked right to me. They’ve kept the car and sent us home in a courtesy car. The mechanic also said that in replacing this gasket he’ll get a look at the timing chain and if this is worn he’ll replace it too.
Another great leap forward in engine tech to relocate a semi-serviceable component to the least-accessible place; presumably this is now an engine-out job then..?

Potentially a win if you get a new chain at the same time, although to an extent I'd expect this to be specced to the life of the engine, or at least a much higher mileage than a vehicle of this age is likely to have covered.

At least it's not a wet belt I suppose...

Sounds like a positive outcome so far, as long as you can trust the garage to do a decent job.

One of the many jobs I had at Castrol was running the global Investigational Analysis laboratory. One of the things we did was analyse samples from customer complaints to determine the cause of failures. I’ve seen the above on more than one occasion and it was always down to contamination with a vegetable oil - either directly through addition to the sump or indirectly through running a diesel engine on unprocessed cooking oil. It became so common that when a sample came in looking like that we could just sniff it to diagnose. Of course we’d do all the expensive lab tests as well for the report.

I used to have an old Triumph, if you parked it too long it would simply run out of oil to leak. I didn’t change the oil as I figured it never stayed in the engine long enough to get dirty. You just kept topping it up.

Something about using felt for some of the seals.

adding a touch of grease to the transmission oil helped keep the fluids inside there.

You could write this off as a tail of a old clunker, but the damn thing had less than 20,000 miles on it when I sold it.
