So would I. Something like an Audi Allroad. I actually saw one towing a single horse trailer out of a very muddy field once where the horsebox lorries were being dragged out at the same time with the help of a tractor. If the Allroad can do that with a trailer on the back, I would expect it to be very competent without one on a muddy or icy surface.
An Allroad, even that's to much 4x4 for me. I'd just get a Quattro variant of the road car, though I ended up with an Alfa 159 Q4 for various reasons. The Alfa does a very good job of pulling my rally car on a trailer through muddy fields even with 'fast road' 245/40R18 tyres.
I changed one of the rear wheels to the space saver spare (motorbike tyre width) The car drove home with no problems (this tactic will only work if you have traction control)
or an limited slip diff

No. Ones for over made up plastic blonds in Alderley Edge and the other is for people in slightly ripped parkers, with West Country accents, standing in ploughed up fields shouting "Power! Power!" at each other.

What do the plastic blondes shouth then in Alderney edge 'please someone help me, my 4x4 won't go in the snow' ?

To my way of thinking an off road vehicle should fit two criteria, first, to drive well and in a straight line where there are no roads or tracks (let's say through hilly woodland), second, when you hit something (a rock, tree or some other inevitable landscape interaction) you take the damaged part off and bash it straight with another rock or replace it and rivet it back on.
Any 4WD that requires a £5k insurance claim to have a sculptured piece of glossy steel reconstructed cannot aspire to off road pretensions.
