BMX for a 5 year old

Cyclechat please help me out here. I know nothing about BMX but I am after bike suggestions for a 5 year old who is really keen on competing in races. They have already done plenty of laps on their Hoy Bonalay 16 but the near slick tyres are not ideal. I always thought of BMX bikes as having fat tyres but when I watched a race session all the bikes look fairly slim.

Any suggestions for makes/models/sizing? I will be looking to buy used.
Any extra general advice on BMX racing will also be greatly received.
