BMX - What to Look For

So, two of my sons are interested in getting BMX or trick bikes and one is wanting to negotiate to buy frame and some parts from a friend at school.

I know absolutely nothing about this area, anyone give an easy to follow guide or link to one? Any kit/parts to aim for or avoid? etc, etc.

thanks, I can see I have a bit of a learning curve...beginning with what it is they actually want, BMX, dirt jump/street and what the differences are.
