The reason for the cost hike was that tickets are allocated in quotas, some for on line sale, some for station sale some for phone call sale. By booking individual tickets she got around the quota allocations.

They do that quite a lot, and its really quite frustrating at times. I've told this story before, but its relevant here too. I do sometimes think that the train companies are run by monkeys. A while back a few mates and me went to climb Ben Nevis - this included getting an overnight Scotrail ticket, so we asked if they had any sleeper compartments left.

"Oh yes, we do!"
"Excellent," we said. "Can we go for that then?"
"No."
"Uhh.... may I ask why?"
"You've got a return ticket. We've only got sleeper cabins for singles."

Dumbfounded, we tried to explain that we didn't need a cabin for the way back. The return journey was during the day. But no, they wouldn't have it. We could go for singles, but that would add more than £100 to the cost, not including the sleeper cabin. In fact, at one point the chap on the end of the phone smugly said "you really want to get this cabin don't you?"

I may or may not have sworn and called him a very ugly thing indeed.

It pays to shop around, try using single dog leg journeys it may mean having an extra ticket or 2, a change here or there but potentially save 50% or more on ridiculous prices. I have travelled by train in Italy, Holland,France, Tunisia etc our fares are robbery.

It get worse than that, if I want to get a return from my local station, its cheaper to get a ticket that has one more or more stops on it i.e rather than starting and ending at Bournbrook Station, I buy the ticket starting and stopping ether Birmingham New St or Fiveways, but get on and off the train at Bournbrook

Often when I'm booking from Lille to Bordo or t'other way, I have a choice, train No. xxxx at say 45 euros, or train No. xxxy at say 60 euros. But they both depart at the same time and run coupled together the difference is that train No. xxxy runs to or from Hendaye and is coupled to or uncoupled from the other train at Bordo.

If I'm visiting South Wales, getting a train to Swansea is invariably about £20 cheaper then getting one to Burry Port. A single from Swansea to Burry Port costs about £3.50, and you can get them on the train. If the train was ever empty enough for the conductor to get along it, that is...
